Project Spotlight: University of Tennessee’s Clement Hall

Clement Hall is a dormitory on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Built in 1956 the structure then accommodated 236 students. An expansion in 1963 upped its capacity to 450. Today, Clement Hall houses 698 students on 8 floors in double occupancy suites. We assisted with the remodel of this historic University of Tennessee building which was completed in 2015.

When architects, Adams Craft Herz Walker, planned the revamp of the residence hall, they wanted to modernize the design. However, they faced a challenge when it came time to update the walls. Covered in old millwork wood paneling that stretched throughout the lobby and its connected spaces, the deteriorating paneling dated the common areas most frequented by students. ACHW wanted to replace the paneling with a more modern wall treatment that blended a similar look with a contemporary touch.

Enter Marlite.

Marlite is a manufacturer of cutting-edge designer wall panel systems, each of which are pre-engineered, offering a wide range of decorative options and durability levels. Due to the multiple finishes required for this project, Marlite’s Surface Systems, commonly referred to as “MAP System" (Mechanically Applied Panels), was a no-brainer. Quartered sapele wood veneer panels clad the majority of the project, however, we also provided two additional finishes that fit seamlesly into the system. The first was a magnetic whiteboard glass, which was used on one interior side wall of the reception desk for note taking. The second finish was a tackable surface in two shades of gray, which is currently being used for posting schedules and current events. Not only did this Marlite MAP System with 1/4 inch satin anodized reveals transform the aesthetics of the hall, it also aided in functionality and usability .

Ultimately, this designer wall panel system has made the atmosphere more like a modern campus residence hall. This, we believe, will help students maintain a sense of home and feel more comfortable while they are away at school.

Replacing the dated wood paneling with Marlite’s Surface Systems created a modern and sleek series of panels that when installed, are themselves, a practical work of art. This project is proof that a Marlite decorative wall panel system wall panel system can transform a space from old and outdated to eye-catching and stylish.
