What Back to School Looks Like in a Covid-19 Affected World

Several months into the coronavirus crisis, we begin to shift our lens to figuring out how to live in a Covid-19 affected world. With a vaccine on the horizon and mask mandates in place across the nation, our lives may not return to normal, or at least what it was before the pandemic. However, as the Summer closes out, some of us face a decision. Should I send my children to school? How can I create a safe environment for my returning students?

The Solution

With that in mind, Steve Ward & Associates are working towards coming up with a solution. In that case, our friends at Stevens Industries have provided us with a great one as part of their ProMed line.

Their new ProMed student barrier is composed of 16 inches of clear acrylic atop 32 inches of laminated wood paneling. It allows students to see and interact as they normally would in a school classroom. At the same time, the barrier can hinder the direct spread of sneezes, coughs, and physical contact between students.

One student barrier separates two students, and they can align to allow group or table seating in a classroom. Moreover, with multiple foot configurations, the barrier allows for multiple desk heights and configurations. The barrier is stable, durable, impact-resistant and easy to clean, with minimal assembly required.

For students, school is a place to learn, feel safe, and socialize. We have always supported creating educational spaces using evidence-based design, and the positive evidence for social distancing and barriers between people has been made clear. In times like these, it is our duty to protect the families we service, and we are here to provide them as many resources as we can.
